Parity nonconservation for neutron resonances in sup 238 U

Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied for 16 {ital p}-wave resonances in {sup 238}U by measuring the helicity dependence of the total cross section for epithermal neutrons scattered from {sup 238}U. A statistical analysis yields a root-mean-square PNC matrix element {ital M}=0.56{sub {minus}0.20}{sup +0.41} meV, which corresponds to a spreading width of {Gamma}{sup PV}=0.9{times}10{sup {minus}7} eV. Under plausible assumptions this gives a value of 4{times}10{sup {minus}7} for {vert bar}{alpha}{sub {ital p}}{vert bar}, the ratio of strengths of the {ital P}-odd and {ital P}-even effective nucleon-nucleon interactions.
