Inert-gas-induced collisional transfer between the first four excited states of Sr has been measured by determining excited-state densities following pulsed laser excitation of the 5 {sup 1}{ital P} state. We observe 5 {sup 1}{ital P} collisional transfer exclusively to the 4 {sup 3}{ital D} state, with ({similar to}800 K) rate coefficients ranging from 0.24 to 2.0{times}10{sup {minus}11} cm{sup 3} s{sup {minus}1} for the various gases. We also measure 4 {sup 1}{ital D}{sub 2} transfer primarily to the 4 {sup 3}{ital D} state, with rate coefficients of 0.65 to 6.8{times}10{sup {minus}11} cm{sup 3} s{sup {minus}1}. The 4 {sup 3}{ital D} state radiative lifetime is observed to be 2.9{plus minus}0.2 {mu}s, collisional mixing between the 4 {sup 3}{ital D}{sub {ital j}} fine-structure levels is essentially gas kinetic ({ital k}{similar to}5{times}10{sup {minus}10} cm{sup 3} s{sup {minus}1}), and {ital k}{lt}10{sup {minus}13} cm{sup 3} s{sup {minus}1} for 4 {sup 3}{ital D}{r arrow}5 {sup 3}{ital P} collisional transfer.
