Electrical ignition device for regeneration of a particulate trap

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7033999
This patent describes an ignition system for regenerating a particulate trap for the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, the particulate trap having an entrance face for receiving a gaseous flow therethrough. The system comprises: (a) a flow guide means effective to direct exhaust gas to the entrance face during filtration by the trap and a gaseous flow during regeneration of the trap; (b) an open cell ceramic foam body extending across the flow guide means and having (i) radially outer ring surface in contact with the radially outer portion of the entrance face and (ii) an entrance surface remote from the particulate trap, the foam body having a pocket located radially inwardly of the ring surface to provide a separation, between the body and trap; (c) electrically energized resistance heating means stationed in a radially central portion of the open cell body adjacent the entrance surface effective to heat the body during regeneration to a temperature effective to ignite the ignitable particulate collection.
