Rotating cylinder internal combustion engine
This patent describes a valve-free, eight cylinder engine comprising a fixed inner assembly, a fixed outer assembly and a rotatable intermediate assembly movable in a circular path between the fixed inner assembly and the fixed outer assembly. The fixed inner assembly comprises a fixed shaft and a pair of sun gears fixed to the shaft in axially spaced relation therealong. The fixed outer assembly comprises two opposite, fore and aft, outer assembly elements enclosing the fixed inner assembly and the movable intermediate assembly. The rotatable intermediate assembly has pairs of planetary gears engaging the pair of sun gears to rotate around the sun gears, a crankshaft interconnecting each pair of planetary gears for rotation therewith, a piston operatively connected to each of the crankshafts for in and out movement responsive to rotation of its associated crankshaft, a piston cylinder within which each piston is mounted for movement therewithin as the planetary gears rotate about the sun gear and the intermediate assembly moves in a circular path about the fixed inner assembly. The orientation of the crankshafts differs by an equal amount between adjacent of the crankshafts and the piston cylinders being equally spaced circumferentially of the intermediate assembly.
