A method for compression release retarding of a four cycle, multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with first and second cylinders having exhaust outlets communicating with a common manifold and wherein the piston of the second cylinder is on its intake stroke while the piston of the first cylinder is near top dead centre of a compression stroke is described comprising the steps of: reducing the fuel intake of the engine; opening an exhaust valve of the first cylinder each time the first cylinder is near top dead centre of the compression stroke; and opening an exhaust valve of the second cylinder during the intake stroke of the second cylinder while the exhaust valve of the first cylinder is open each time.
