Energy economics and building design

Book ·
OSTI ID:7032811
Architects, engineers, interior designers, and other building design professionals have a major role in the solution of today's energy problems. They can largely control a building's need for energy by effectively planning its size and shape, siting, orientation, spatial arrangement, materials, and many other factors that affect its energy use. Since an energy-conscious building will save its owner money after it begins operation, designers must understand and make use of the first-cost and life-cycle cost implications for the owner. This book shows how to evaluate designs by: (1) estimating thermal and luminous savings, (2) translating these savings into monetary benefits, and (3) comparing the benefits to the costs required to create them. In addition, the book points out ways to cut the often huge energy bills in nonresidential urban buildings. 24 references, 70 figures, 100 tables.
