Energy Technology Review, January-February 1994
The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) was founded 41 years ago to push the limits of science and technology for national security and defense. Research was driven by the demands of the Cold War and focused primarily on the design and development of nuclear weapons. Today, however, the world situation has changed dramatically, and it is clear that US national security depends as much on a strong economy and an educated populace as it does on military strength. As we prepare for the 21st century, the highest priority missions for LLNL and the other two national weapons labs., Los Alamos and Sandia, are enhancing US economic competitiveness and countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This issue of Energy and Technology Review highlights the Laboratory's 1993 accomplishments in its mission areas and core programs-economic competitiveness, national security, energy, the environment, lasers, biology and biotechnology, engineering, physics, chemistry and materials science, computers and computing, and science and math education. LLNL is a major national resource of science and technology expertise, and is committed to applying this expertise to meet vital national needs.
