Battery energy storage system (BESS) combines high technologies in battery, converter electronics and real time computer control, offers high capability for load management. It realizes a practical method for load management in power distribution system or demand-side loads. A BESS operates in real power supply for load shifting; while the BESS can additionally be extended in reactive control for reactive power compensation. A new control strategy for BESS to operate in real power mode and reactive power mode is discussed. In this paper, simulations for a demand-side BESS are presented, together with experiments on an operating system set-up in power laboratory using real time control implementation. It tests the real and reactive power control of BESS using a 10 KVA/30 KWHr laboratory system. The results illustrates that the proposed method is effective and easy in this study.
