This paper reports that researchers working for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have identified 11 new chemicals that appear to be good alternatives to CFC and HCFC refrigerants. Included are nine hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and two hydrofluoroethers (HFEs). The chemicals include HFC-227ca, HFC-227ea, HFC-236cb, HFC-236ea, HFC-236fa, HFC-245ca, HFC-245cb, HFC-245fa, HFC-254cb, HFE-125 and HFE-143a. The researchers originally synthesized 40 new chemicals, determined their important physical properties and then selected the best candidates.
