Precipitation of coherent particles of the k-carbide (Fe,Mn){sub 3}AlC{sub x} in Fe-Mn-Al-C alloys, have been studied extensively in the past by means of x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) because the presence of carbide has a great influence on the mechanical properties of the alloys. With the increasing of the aging time at 55{degrees}C, coarse d-carbide began to occur on the austenite-austenite ({gamma}-{gamma}) and austenite-ferrite ({gamma}-{alpha}) grain boundaries. Recently the authors made a detailed examination on the microstructural changes of Fe-26.6wt%Mn-8.8wt%Al-0.61wt%C alloy during aging. It was shown that complex carbide M{sub 23}C{sub 6} may occur on {gamma}-{alpha} grain boundaries. In Mo and W-containing steels, low alloy steels, and stainless steels the precipitation of M{sub 23}C{sub 6} carbide has been well established. However, M{sub 23}C{sub 6} carbides in Fe-Mn-Al-C alloys have never been found during the heat treatment stage. The precipitation of M{sub 23}C{sub 6} carbide is associated with the decomposition of austenite phase. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the precipitation of M{sub 23}C{sub 6} carbide in an Fe-26.6Mn-8.8Al-0.61C alloy.
