An overview is presented of a program leading to the development of a thermal sensor for the glass industry. The approach makes use of fiber optics for remote sensing and an optical multiplexer to allow economical multipoint, multiple wavelength measurements. A series of three optical approaches are under consideration for various parts of the glass forming process. These generally attempt to make use of the remote, multipoint characteristics of the prototype detector to (1) minimize the interference of reflected background radiation on optical pyrometry measurements, and (2) to use the variations of glass transmission with wavelength to develop a temperature vs. depth characteristic within the melt. 2 refs., 6 figs.
