Canada's natural gas bubble has vanished, CERI report warns

The Canadian natural gas bubble - created by large supply deliverability surpluses in the west - has vanished, says the Canadian Energy Research Institute. The report, based on a survey of 50 Canadian producers, confirms an earlier NOVA Corp. review of its deliverability system that showed there may not be sufficient peak day supply to meet all market needs. This, CERI reports, is in spite of survey participants' expectation that Canadian exploration and development activity will rebound strongly after 1993, with annual reserve replacement rates of between 110 and 120 percent through 1996. Major buyers of Canadian gas should take note, CERI said, because with the specter of potential shortfalls, they should rely more on long-term, firm supply and less on short-term, interruptible supply - which may not be available even at exorbitant shot prices.
