Relativistic astrophysics - A report on the Ninth Texas Symposium

Journal Article · · Comments Astrophys.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7028389
The present status of the field of relativistic astrophysics is reviewed, with particular emphasis given to contributions presented at the Ninth Texas Symposium, held in Munich in December, 1978. Consideration is given to observational confirmations of Einstein's general theory of relativity in the case of the binary pulsar PSR 1913 + 16, and approximate and exact mathematical investigations of systems with an asymptotically flat space-time. Determinations of the Hubble constant and the deceleration parameter are discussed, and implications of the discovery of the cosmic 3 K background for cosmological models are indicated. Studies of the central machines of quasars and active galaxies, detailed processes in pulsars, the mechanisms of supernovas and the characteristics of galactic and extragalactic X-ray sources are also discussed.
