Effusion-mass spectrometric determination of thermodynamic properties of gaseous potassium sulfide species

Journal Article · · High Temp. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7028156
An effusion-mass spectrometric study has been completed for the thermodynamic properties, which are the first experimentally reported, of the gaseous potassium sulfides, KS and K/sub 2/S. These species appear in seeded MHD plasma and may be involved in the recovery of potassium from open-cycle coal-fired MHD electric power systems. The vapor species over condensed K/sub 2/S were observed mass spectrometrically. The gaseous dissociation reactions K/sub 2/S(g) = 2K(g) + 1/2S/sub 2/(g) and KS(g) = K(g) + 1/2S/sub 2/(g) yielded ..delta..H/sub 2//sup 98/ values of 61.7 +/- 1.0 and 10.0 +/- 1.0 kcal mol/sup -1/, respectively. The third-law enthalpies of formation, ..delta..H/sub f,298/, were -3.8 +/- 1.0 for K/sub 2/S(g) and 26.6 +/- 1.0 kcal mol/sup -1/ for KS(g). The dissociation energy, D/sub 0/, for KS to ground state K, /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/, and S(/sup 3/P/sub 2/) was 60 kcal mol/sup -1/.
