Intensity and polarization of radiation emerging from a semi-infinite medium containing assigned sources

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. AJ (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

Exact values are given for the intensity and linear polarization of radiation emerging from a semi-infinite medium which consists of small, absorbing, isotropically polarizing particles. The following cases are considered: the sources of unpolarized radiation are distributed in the medium uniformly, grow linearly or quadratically into the interior of the medium, decline exponentially away from the boundary, or are located at an infinitely large distance from the boundary of the medium (the Milne problem). The depolarizing influence of the possible anisotropy of the scattering particles is also estimated.
