This article describes how several hydroelectric projects operate in series to satisfy downstream irrigation needs in water-short western and northern Greece. Two areas of Greece have experienced substantial and unusual hydroelectric development in recent years. In the west, three hydroelectric projects--Kremasta, Kastraki and Stratos--function as a series and are operated to satisfy the needs of downstream entities that require water for irrigation. Public Power Corp. of Greece operates the power plants. Similar active growth in hydroelectric development has taken place in northern Greece. In this area, the Polyphyto, Sfikia and Assomata projects also operate in series with consideration for downstream irrigation during the summer. In western Greece, the hydropower development of the Acheloos river includes six major dams and reservoirs. The Tavropos, Kremasta, Kastraki and Stratos systems are in operation, Messochora is under construction and Sykia is in the final design. The diversion scheme of the Acheloos river to the eastern part of Greece will require the Pyli and Mouzaki dams and the Pefkofyto, Mouzaki and Mavromati power plants in the Thessaly plain. A layout of the dams on the Acheloos river is presented.
