In this paper a method is described which is for inversion of velocity and density of layered medium by using characteristic integral in [tau]-p domain. The method works in the following steps: converting offset seismic data into [tau]-p domain, calculating inversely the wave impedance of any two traces of plane wave seismogram respectively by using characteristic integral and deriving velocity and density from the wave impedance of the layered medium. It is discussed how error influences the inversion result. Calculation of theoretical model gives satisfactory result.
