Liquid re-entrainment is the process of previously separated liquid droplets breaking away from the gas/liquid interface and becoming suspended in the gas. The re-entrainment process generally occurs in two steps. First, high gas velocity produces disturbances in the gas/liquid interface, such as waves and ripples. Secondly, the gas shears some of the liquid from its surface through momentum transfer from the high-velocity gas to the low-velocity liquid. This process reverses the desired result of settling liquid droplets out of the gas. This article supplements two earlier articles on horizontal separator design. The equations presented here are based on correlations proposed by Ishii and Grolm.
