Five-day-old Wistar rats were exposed to different doses of /sup 60/Co ..gamma.. rays and then sacrificed 30 days later; then determination was made of location of Purkinje cells on histological preparations of cerebellar cortex. It was shown that the extent of disorganization of location of Purkinje cells in the cerebellar cortex of animals that survived exposure to radiation at an early age increases rapidly with increase in radiation dosage, tending toward a maximum at the minimum absolutely lethal dosage. The progressive disorganization of Purkinje cells is associated with a decrease in weight of the cerebellum and impairment of some electrophysiological parameters.
