Interlayer coupling effect in high- T sub c superconductors probed by YBa sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 7 minus x /PrBa sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 7 minus x superlattices

The effect of coupling between layers of the high-{ital T}{sub {ital c}} superconductors was studied by varying both the YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} and PrBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} layer thicknesses in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}}/PrBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} superlattices. Superconductivity was found even when the YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} layers had nominal thicknesses as small as 12 A (one unit-cell thickness) but coupling between unit-cell layers is needed to achieve a {ital T}{sub {ital c}} of 90 K. The decrease of {ital T}{sub {ital c}} in isolated YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital x}} layers with increasing sheet resistance is on the same scale of about {h bar}/{ital e}{sup 2} as observed for ordinary superconductors.
