Repowering: Options proliferate for managing generation assets

Journal Article · · Power; (United States)
OSTI ID:7023394
This article examines the repowering of power plants for added capacity and for emissions reduction. The author feels that repowering should only take place if indicated by a technical evaluation grounded in sound economic, efficiency, environmental, and reliability criteria. Repowering in the article is defined as: partial repowering which includes replacing a boiler with a heat-recovery steam generator coupled to a gas turbine; station repowering which is the use of existing infrastructure but not the original steam cycle; and site repowering which is reusing an existing site but none of the original equipment.
