Many utilities are looking at repowering as a way to extend the lives of existing generating plants and to upgrade them. The promise of these gains is there, but it is just beginning to be reached for by a handful of utilities. Most are installing new equipment (usually gas turbines and heat-recovery steam generators in combined cycles) linked to old equipment (usually a steam turbine and site auxiliary systems) at an existing site. So far, natural gas appears to be the fuel of choice for these companies' repowering plans. Main reasons are the capital and non-fuel O M cost advantages of natural gas cycles.
