Defend your mills against fire, wear, and mechanical failure

Journal Article · · Power; (United States)

Boiler downtime associated with pulverizer operation is attributed to five major causes: mill fires and explosions; failure of pulverizer drive components, including gearboxes, bearings, and shafts; failure of grinding elements, such as rolls, rings, and balls; failure of air-system components used for coal circulation, classification, and transportation; furnace-related problems such as carbon carryover and slagging. In selecting mills, one has to factor in feed-coal size and quality, required fineness, capacity, turndown, and redundancy. Old pulverizers can be upgraded to improve reliability and safety.
