Superconducting gap in Pr[sub x]Y[sub 1[minus]x]Ba[sub 2]Cu[sub 4]O[sub 8] and YBa[sub 2[minus]y]Sr[sub y]Cu[sub 4]O[sub 8] probed by infrared phonon self-energies

We report a reflectivity study of the z-polarized TO-phonons of Pr[sub x]Y[sub 1[minus]x]Ba[sub 2]Cu[sub 4]O[sub 8] and YBa[sub 2[minus]y]Sr[sub y]Cu[sub 4]O[sub 8] alloys in the temperature range 10-300 K. Anomalies of the frequency and linewidth of the plane-oxygen vibration at [omega] [approximately] 300 cm[sup [minus]1] due to the opening of the superconducting gap are found to occur upon crossing the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Phonon self-energy effects are strongly dependent on Tc, providing evidence for a relative shift of the gap with respect to the energy of phonon. 30 refs., 2 figs.
