Title: Study of the chemistry of aldehydes in air masses transiting over the Paris region

Conference · · Preprints of Papers Presented at National Meeting, Division of Water, Air and Waste Chemistry, American Chemical Society; (USA)
OSTI ID:7019822

Atmospheric physical-chemists are now well aware that carbonyl compounds play a very important role in the photooxidation mechanisms of the lower troposphere. They are, firstly, the products of initial step in the oxidation of practically all organic compounds and, secondly because of photolysis, a major source of free radicals mainly in polluted zones and their plumes. These compounds are therefore intimately involved in the mechanisms which determine hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl radicals levels in the lower layers of the atmosphere. Until recently field studies aimed at identifying the source and sink factors of these compounds concentrated on sites where pollutant confinement was likely to provide major perturbations such as the appearance of photochemical smog. Here, on the other hand, they shall examine the situation for a generally well-ventilated built-up area and, among other things, what happens in the plume when this transits over rural areas after contamination by the city.
