In 1976, the US Environmental Protection Agency established regulations for radium 226, radium 228, gross alpha and gross beta in drinking water. The Agency will be revising its regulations on radionuclides and it has indicated that the revised regulations will set limits for two new specific contaminants, uranium and radon, in addition to maintaining the existing ones for radium. The treatment technologies generally available for the three contaminants are different because the chemical nature of each element is different.
