This patent describes a method for producing a self-supporting ceramic composite body. It comprises a ceramic matrix obtained by oxidation of a parent metal comprising at least one metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, tin, silicon, titanium, zirconium and hafnium, to form a polycrystalline material comprising an oxidation reaction product of the parent metal with at least one oxidant and at least one dross material embedded by the ceramic matrix. It comprises the steps of: providing at least one comminuted dross material as a permeable mass of dross material, orienting the parent metal and the permeable mass of dross material relative to each other and heating the parent metal to a temperature above its melting point but below the melting point of the oxidation reaction product.
