Stable conditions have been identified for two-zone processing of the superconducting thallium cuprate Tl[sub 0.5]Pb[sub 0.5](Sr[sub 0.8]Ba[sub 0.2])[sub 2]Ca[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub [ital y]]. With [ital P](O[sub 2]) of 0.8 atm, [ital P](Tl[sub 2]O) of 4.4[times]10[sup [minus]3] atm, and a sample temperature of 920 [degree]C, single-phase Tl[sub 0.5]Pb[sub 0.5](Sr[sub 0.8]Ba[sub 0.2])[sub 2]Ca[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub [ital y]] is produced with a [ital T][sub [ital c]] of 115 K, complete diamagnetic shielding, and Meissner fraction greater than 70%. Although a small amount of melting occurs under these conditions, a comparison of the low-field diamagnetic shielding for these samples with samples of Pb- and Sr-free TlBa[sub 2]Ca[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub [ital y]] and Tl[sub 2]Ba[sub 2]Ca[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub [ital y]] suggests that such melting is not necessary to produce the triple-CuO[sub 2]-layer superconductors.
