In this paper the authors compare the Koval, Todd and Longstaff and Fayers models of unstable miscible displacement. They consider both flow in a five-spot geometry and displacements under the influence of gravity. Model predictions are compared with available experimental data and the results of direct simulation. The authors show that the Todd and Longstaff and Fayers models are in close accord and agree with experiment for five-spot displacements without the need for recalibration, despite their different formulation. Both models are shown to under-estimate the increase in recovery for gravity-stable floods, and some reasons for this are given. Recalibration is required to obtain improved results with gravity.
