Absorber changes solve offshore high-H/sub 2/S problems

Excessive H/sub 2/S levels in sales gas from an offshore California crude-oil production platform were solved by detailed sample analyses and careful process evaluation and equipment tests, according to Union Carbide's solvent supplier on the project. Despite installation of an amine-based sweetening unit to treat the sour associated gas on the platform, H/sub 2/S levels continued to exceed sales-gas specifications. The platform operator anticipated an inlet H/sub 2/S level of 4,000 ppm in the sour associated gas, with 3.5 to 4.5 mol % CO/sub 2/. The sweet, pipeline-gas specification for H/sub 2/S was 4 ppm (1/4 grain). The design flow rate of associated gas was 20 MMscfd at relatively low pressure (65-95 psig).
