Shear-wave propagation has been studied experimentally in samples of amorphous ribbon material of composition Fe/sub 40/Ni/sub 38/Mo/sub 4/B/sub 18/ (METGLAS 2826MB). The samples were in the as-received, stress-relieved, and transverse-field annealed states. Pulse-echo measurements have been made at frequencies between 0.5 and 2.5 MHz and at various applied fields. The frequency dependence of the absorption coefficient is consistent with the form af+bf /sup 4/ found in crystalline solids. In the case of amorphous material the second term is attributed to scattering from domains. As-received material has a higher loss than field annealed, especially at very low applied fields; this is thought to be due to magnetic damping associated with moment rotation. The implications of these results for shear-wave magnetometry are briefly considered.
