In the 1970's, Ahlstrom started a fuel use program aimed at reducing its dependence on fuel oil. A circulating fluidized bed boiler was installed at its board and sawmill plant near Pori on the west coast of Finland using peat and wood waste as fuel. Based on the success of this first unit, two other units were sold. The first, a 7.0 MW(t) district heating unit burning peat, wood wastes and coal, and the second unit - a sludge incineration unit. The operating experience of these plants is described.
