Technological advances in heating, cooling, and insulation of Japanese homes are described. Since electricity and natural gas are very expensive, development of fabrics for clothing that provide warmth without weight is a major thrust in the country. Advanced window technologies have been slow to catch on since most homes feature frosted glass for privacy and the emissivity of the glass is probably higher than that of clear glass.
