Variational calculation of complex natural modes of xenon oscillation (LWBR Development Program)

A variational calculation of the complex natural modes of Xe oscillation (p-modes) is presented. The I and Xe components of the p-modes are eliminated before the functional is set up, eliminating the need for trial functions for these variables. The eigenvalues p are determined by the solution of a polynomial equation. When used in conjunction with a single ..mu..-mode trial function, an improvement in the usual ..mu..-mode formalism is produced, since fast fission production of Xe can be taken into account more exactly.
