Process for generation of carbon monoxide and hydrogen

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7010635
This patent describes a method for the production of hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide by the partial combustion of a fluid hydrocarbon with oxygen in a combustion gas turbine. The process requires having a combustion section and an expansion section and injection of fluid hydrocarbon and an oxygen-rich gas into the combustion section at a pressure substantially above atmospheric pressure. This process effecting reaction of said hydrocarbon and oxygen at a substantial superatmospheric pressure under exothermic combustion conditions effective to maintain the temperature of said reaction zone in the range of 2000/sup 0/F and above. This step results in relative proportions of a product gas stream consisting mainly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide at an elevated reaction temperature, and immediately thereafter reducing the temperature and pressure of said high-temperature product gas stream through the range of from about 1600/sup 0/F to about 600/sup 0/F by expansion and cooling of said gas stream in said gas turbine.
