Method of manufacturing a gas rich in carbon monoxide
This patent describes a method of manufacturing a gas rich in carbon monoxide from solid carbonaceous material by contacting powdered carbonaceous material at a temperature of from about 1500/sup 0/-2000/sup 0/F in the form of a dense fluidized mass in a gas-producing zone with a feed gas containing carbon dioxide, steam, and free oxygen. This occurs for a sufficient period to completely reduce CO/sub 2/ using steam present in said zone while carbonaceous material is maintained at said temperature. The free oxygen content of said feed gas is maintained while a product gas rich in carbon dioxide and steam is removed from said zone. The carbonaceous material from said zone is also then removed and charged to a second physically separated zone. The carbonaceous material in said second zone is maintained in the form of a dense fluidized mass with a combustion-supporting gas containing steam and sufficient free oxygen to provide the desired composition in said feed gas, being passed upwardly through said second zone. Hot gases from said second zone are passed and discharged into said first-named zone to supply said feed gas thereto. Ash from said second zone is then removed.
