Rotary internal combustion engine and method of starting the engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7010324
This patent describes an internal combustion engine. It comprises: a housing defining a combustion chamber having an intake port; a first vane mounted for rotation in the combustion chamber about a fixed axis; a second vane mounted for rotation in the combustion chamber about the fixed axis independently of the first vane; control means preventing rotation of either vane in one direction about the axis while allowing free rotation in the other direction about the axis so that the vanes may rotate freely in the other direction about the axis and may simultaneously undergo relative rotation; converter means, including an output shaft, drivingly connected to the vanes and operative to convert such rotation of the vanes in the other direction and such relative rotation into unidirectional rotation of the output shaft in the other direction; and starter means for the engine including means for generating relative rotation of the vanes by delivering a charge to the intake port under a boost pressure.
