Engine starter gearing
An engine starter is described for engagement with a starting gear of an engine to be started, the engine starter comprising: a power shaft; a pinion gear mounted to the power shaft for axial and rotatable movement relative thereto, the pinion gear further being engageable with the starting gear; clutch means slidably mounted to the power shaft, the clutch means further comprising: a primary clutch; a secondary clutch mounted adjacent the primary clutch to communicate therewith; the secondary clutch comprising a secondary driving member mounted to the shaft and a secondary driven member mounted concentric to the secondary driving member and communicating with the primary clutch; the primary clutch comprising a primary driving member and a primary driven member mounted adjacent the primary driving member for communication therewith. The primary driven member further is connected with the pinion gear such that rotational force from the power shaft is translated to the pinion gear by the primary and secondary clutch; means for resiliently biasing the secondary clutch closed to translate rotational force from the power shaft to the primary clutch for rotating the starting gear of the engine to be started. The resilient biasing means is adapted to permit the secondary clutch to slip when torsional force is imposed by the engine to the power shaft; and means for separating the primary clutch when the pinion gear is driven by the starting gear of the engine to be started at a predetermined speed of rotation faster than the speed of the power shaft.
