Modification of appliance burners with flame inserts for lower NOx emissions. Final report, June 1981-December 1984
Abstract
Technology for modifying burners of contemporary appliances to significantly lower the NOx emissions is described. The reduction should allow the burners to meet the proposed emissions standard of 40 ng/J heat output for furnaces and water heaters in the State of California. The burner modification consists of judiciously positioning a ceramic or stainless steel insert in the burner flame. The report presents the results of applying the technology to the burners of manufacturers who signed non-exclusive, royalty-free agreements with GRI to use the patent applied for burner insert technology. The proper application of the flame inserts did not increase the CO emissions significantly, did not deleteriously affect burner and pilot performance and did not degrade appliance efficiency.
