Bismuth titanate niobate with mixed-layer structure Bi/sub 7/Ti/sub 4/NbO/sub 21/ is a ferroelectric, probable Curie point 870/sup 0/C. The ceramic Bi/sub 7/Ti/sub 4/NbO/sub 21/ has a high piezoelectric modulus. We examined the electrophysical parameters on polycrystalline specimens made by the usual ceramic technology. The density of BTN was determined by the weighing method and attains about 91% of the theoretical; the porosity (about 9%) is due to closed pores. The microstructure consists of elongated grains characteristic of these compounds. The shape of the crystal is related to the cell symmetry, so one takes these grains as having the shape of a tetragonal prism, with the base a distorted square.
