There are few activities which a utility can undertake that have more economic benefits than maintenance painting of aged, galvanized transmission towers. Maintenance painting at the proper time will help protect the remaining galvanizing and allow it to continue protecting the steel for many more years than it would without the use of protective coatings. For the full economic benefit to be realized, specific consideration must be given to planned maintenance painting, surface preparation methods, coating selection, application techniques, worker safety, and contractor prequalification. Negligence in any of these areas will result in a job that does not live up to its designed service life and could result in serious liability on behalf of the contractor or owner. This report will help one avoid mistakes commonly made in the specification and execution of these projects.
