Magnetism and superconductivity in doped La sub 2 CuO sub 4

The temperature ({ital T}) dependence of magnetic susceptibility ({chi}) in (La{sub 1{minus}{ital x}M}{sub {ital x}}){sub 2}CuO{sub 4} ({ital M}=Sr,Ba) is examined for {ital T}{lt}580 K. A broad peak ({chi}{sub max}) in the {chi}-{ital T} curve, already reported for a Sr-doped system, is also observed in a Ba-doped one. The temperature exhibiting {chi}{sub max} decreases with a linear dependence on {ital x} and tends rapidly to zero at around {ital x}={ital x}{sub {ital c}} ({ital x}{sub {ital c}}{congruent}0.12 for {ital M}=Sr and {similar to}0.1 for {ital M}=Ba). For {ital x}{approx gt}{ital x}{sub {ital c}}, the {chi} monotonically increases with lowering {ital T} over the entire {ital T} range examined. In both systems, the superconductivity is found to be remarkably suppressed above {ital x}{sub {ital c}}.
