Hydride phases of various composition may be formed during hydrogenation on palladium alloy catalysts. This paper studies the effect on the catalytic properties, of the changes of the texture and the composition of the surface layer of palladium alloyed with ruthenium, caused by repeated transformations of the hydride phases. An illustration, magnified 1000 times, is shown of the initial catalyst surface, and of the surfaces of samples subjected to 70 conversions of the hydride phases at temperatures below 360 K, and with intermediate treatments with air and then hydrogen after each conversion of the hydride phases.
