In ..gamma..-irradiated atactic polystyrene at 77 K the stabilization of trapped electrons (lambda /SUB max/ > 1000 nm) with the quantum yield G about 0.06, anion radicals (lambda /SUB max/ = 405, 460 nm) with G = 0.6, cation radicals (lambda /SUB max/ = 360, 480, 525, and 920 nm), and free radicals with G = 0.2 was observed. The photoexcitation of trapped electrons causes their recombination with quantum yield Q = 0.06 + or - 0.03. The excitation of cation radicals leads to the formation of free radicals. The photoexcitation of anion radicals results in their photoionization with the subsequent electron trapping by intermolecular traps. The radicals formed during the photoexcitation of charged particles are stabilized basically within a single kinetic cell.
