Downhole inhibitor squeeze treatments are commonly used in the producing wells in the Kuparuk River Field (KRF), Alaska, to control mineral scale deposition and consequent production declines. Several types of inhibitors and treatment methods have been effectively utilized over the years; however, simple adsorption squeezes have proven to be the most economic. Based on a water treatment cost of only $0.01 to $0.02 per barrel of produced water, this program is considered one of the most successful in the industry. This paper focuses on the evolution of the current scale inhibition techniques and the associated monitoring program. Field performance data and results from laboratory studies are also provided.
