Spiking of the CW mode-locked Nd:YAG laser: Mathematical model

If the frequency of an acoustooptic mode locker is detuned from the fundamental resonance frequency of the laser cavity, regular of irregular oscillations of the picosecond pulse energy result. The picosecond pulses are emitted in burst or spikes similarly as produced by simultaneous modes locking and Q switching. The pulse energy is increased thereby up to 40 times compared to a CW mode-locked pulse obtained without detuning. Rate equations with a temporal loss modulation are used to calculate the shape and repetition rate of the spikes.
