This patent describes a free electron laser. It comprises: an electron gun for generating an electron beam having a cathode and an anode; a waveguide cavity resonator section having an input end and an output end through which the electron beam passes; a phase priming array means coupled to the waveguide cavity section for accepting an input control signal and for outputting a priming signal having a preselected phase to the waveguide cavity section; wiggler means for varying the trajectory of electrons in the electron beam while the electrons pass through the waveguide cavity section at a frequency determined by the spacing of magnets in the wiggler means, the electrons emitting radiation; and output means for outputting the emitted radiation.
