Mixtures of neopentane and deuterium were pyrolyzed in a flow system at temperatures near 829 and 930 K and at 30-700 Torr. Gas chromatographic measurements of the yields of methane and ethane at various conditions enabled calculation of the rate coefficients for CH/sub 3/ + D/sub 2/ ..-->.. CH/sub 3/D + D. When these results are combined with earlier results for lower temperatures, the Arrhenius plot for this reaction is found to be a curve. This curve has been fitted to a transition-state theory expression incorporating tunneling through a one-dimensional Eckart barrier. Transition-state and barrier parameters were found to be consistent with values previously determined for the reaction of CH/sub 3/ with light H/sub 2/.
