The electrochemical reduction of coordination compounds of oxovanadium(IV), nickel(II), and copper(II) with tetradentate N/sup 1/, N/sup 4/-di(salicylidene) isochalco-genosemicarbazides and their S(Se)-alkyl derivatives on a dropping mercury electrode in dimethylformamide on a background of 0.1 M Et/sub 4/NClO/sub 4/ has been studied. The first cathodic wave corresponds to the reduction of the ligand fragment and does not affect the central atom, as was proved with the aid of ESR in the example case of the nickel compounds. The influence of the nature of the substituents in various parts of the molecule on the electrochemical behavior of the complexes has been investigated. The formation of oxygen adducts of the chelates has been discovered. The compounds investigated bay be arranged in the following order according to the ease of reduction of the oxygen adducts: VO > Ni > Cu.
