To increase the knowledge on synergistic and antagonistic interactions between inhibitors (fatty amines, imidazolines, carboxamide ethoxylates) and surfactants (nonionics, quats) systematic investigations were performed under sweet gas production conditions (NaCl/CaCl{sub 2}-brine, 0.5 MPa CO{sub 2}, 80 to 130 C, ``rotating cage``: 4 m/s) with low alloy steel samples exhibiting three different microstructures (J 55, C 75, C 90) and finely ground or atmospherically rusted surface. It was proved for highly turbulent conditions that surfactants can affect the performance of CO{sub 2} corrosion inhibitors significantly, depending on the class of inhibitors, the class of surfactants, the microstructure of the steel and the temperature. Nonionics inhibit quenched-and-tempered steel, but stimulate corrosion of J 55. They impair the efficiency of amine inhibitors. Amine/quat combinations show synergistic effects. The inhibitor/surfactants interaction was investigated by different surface analysis techniques (XPS, LAMMA, TOF-SIMS).
